You did WHAT with your placenta??

As most of you already probably know, we welcomed another addition to our family in July. I’m still the only female in my home since we were blessed with yet another little boy 🙂 I was lucky enough to have the midwives through my pregnancy and one day while going over my health history, the topic of depression and ppd came up. I like many others, have struggled with depression over the years and knew post partum was more likely to happen this time around for a few reasons. One of my midwives suggested I look into ingesting my placenta, as its been proven to help decrease PPD. I’ve heard a lot of stories of women who have ingested their placentas in different ways, and although I suggest it to my clients , I had never really considered doing my own until this point. I am not a meat eater! The sight of most red meat makes my stomach turn so I knew there would be no way I could even consider “frying it up like liver and onions”! I looked into encapsulating it, since there is no taste to it that way and its as simple as popping a pill. I decided that would be my best bet.
My son arrived 2 weeks early and my midwives all made the comment that his placenta was the smallest they’d ever seen! (it wasn’t much bigger than my fist!) which was a shock, since I remember the placentas from my other 2 children being quite large. – Mind you, my 2nd last baby was also 3 lbs heavier than my newest! –
With my placenta and baby in tow, I left the hospital and stuck my placenta in the freezer until I was able to find the time to dehydrate and encapsulate it. When the day arrived, my sister and I eagerly took on the challenge ! I had bought some fresh ginger and lemons to boil in the pot with my placenta. After sanitizing everything and giving the placenta a good rinse, I steamed it for about a half hour . By the time it was finished, it wasn’t much bigger than a tennis ball! I sliced it very thin and dehydrated it in the oven. Once that was done I ground it up into a powder and put it into the capsuls. I’ll admit, when it came time to take the first pill, I was a little nervous! I’ve never been good at swallowing pills of any size and these were NOT small! I made sure I had a lot of water on hand and luckily I didn’t choke on it! I have gotten a real kick out of peoples expressions when I mention encapsulating/ingesting my placenta. I think can count on one hand the number of people who have been familiar/supportive! Most people make a disgusted face and mimic a gag reflex lol. If I can do it, anyone can! I have noticed a huge difference in my moods since I’ve been taking the pills daily. I had 2 months of very bad post partum depression. Since I’ve now been taking the pills for nearly 2 weeks, the difference is like night and day. I definitely notice a difference in my energy level if I miss a day of taking a pill. My milk has increased (although I’ve never had issues with that before! ) I’ve now been able to pump a lot more to store in the freezer as well as exclusively nursing my son. The benefits of this awesome little organ far out weigh the negative aspects, and now that I have personally done it I absolutely will recommend it!
